What We Do

Click on the banners below to see more information about our programs and services, including our Legal Advice clinics.

Legal Advice

We offer 30-minutes of free legal advice to those who qualify.

We provide free and confidential legal information, advice, advocacy and representation in a positive, inclusive, and supportive environment. Our legal services are free of charge for people with low income. We use a set of income guidelines to determine whether you qualify for our services.

What to Expect:

When you first contact our office, either in-person, by phone, or by online intake – our intake team will require some information from you. They will ask you some questions about yourself, so they know who you are moving forward. They will also ask for your monthly income to see if you qualify for our services, and take a brief summary of what you are going through. If you qualify, they will guide you through the next steps to book an appointment with a volunteer lawyer. If you do not qualify, they will refer you to the next best place to assist you based on your needs.

You can contact our clinic at (403) 314-9129, or toll-free at 1 (877) 314-9129. You can also email at info@communitylegalclinic.net or fill out our Online Intake Form, here.

How Our Services Work:

-You must book an appointment to see a lawyer. Appointments are available across Central Alberta and other locations virtually.

If you have a criminal matter you must get your Disclosure from the Crown’s office or at your first appearance before an appointment can be booked.

-Clients need to bring their own interpreter, if required.

-Organize and bring important papers, including court documents, to your appointment.

-Clients are asked to make childcare arrangements as there is no on-site childcare. And children are not permitted to be present during the appointment.

Legal Assistance

After receiving summary legal advice at one of our clinics, clients may be referred to the Staff Lawyers for further assistance. Services that a staff lawyer can provide could include more in-depth legal advice, document preparation or representation. Clients are required to provide proof of income to qualify for this program.

Immigration Support

This program provides assistance to newcomers who need help with immigration matters but can’t afford a lawyer. Services are provided by a certified Immigration Consultant, and may include help with permits, visas, refugee applications, family sponsorship and other matters. You can fill out our Immigration Online Intake Form, here.

Tenant Support

This program provides assistance to tenants with issues such as eviction and withheld security deposits under the Residential Tenancy Act. Assistance may include advocacy, application to the Residential Tenancy Dispute Resolution Services (RTDRS), or defending a civil court claim with the assistance of a lawyer.

Employment & Social Benefits

In partnership with the Worker’s Resource Center, a caseworker assists with issues such as EI, Lost Wages, Workplace Injury, Human Rights, CPP-Disability, short and long-term Disability and AISH.

Ask-A-Lawyer

This program allows individuals to meet with a lawyer for a 20-minute one-on-one session to receive brief legal advice at no charge. Please visit our Events page, or contact our office for upcoming dates and locations.

Photo ID Affidavits

Photo ID Affidavit clinics are held monthly at our Red Deer office to provide an Affidavit of Identification to assist in accessing basic local services. This ID does not replace government-issued ID, but may help access community supports that require general photo ID. Check our Events page, or call the office for upcoming dates and other locations.

Wills Program

This program provides a very basic Will, Personal Directive, and Power of Attorney. Access to this program is very limited and clients must provide proof of income to be eligible.
